Movie Round Up

There have been a LOT of new movies coming out this year, and I've done a round up of the latest ones so you can work out what to see next. What better way to end your weekend than with a movie?

Ad Astra - out now

Ad Astra, "to the stars", is about an astronaut, Roy, who travels through the solar system to find his Father, who disappeared years earlier, and had been thought to be dead. Until now. There are all of the kinds of struggles you'd imagine you'd face on a journey through the cosmos - including primates gone bad (although, have baboons ever really been good?). Having Brad Pitt as the leading man is never a bad thing, I'll tell you that. The movie did raise an interesting question - how much did Subway have to pay to get a franchise on the moon? Was Pita Pit ever in the running? In all seriousness though, it was a stunning film. TIP: The premiere was at the IMAX theatre on Queen Street, and getting to see it on an even bigger screen really added to the experience. So if you've got an extra big screen near you, go see it on that!

Good Boys - out now

I knew I'd be a fan of this one. It has the same vibes as Super Bad (and Seth Rogen is one of the producers), but it takes a jump back and deals with tweens. After 12-year-old Max is invited to his first kissing party, he and his friends end up on a wild ride to get there after spying on the neighbours with a drone takes a bad turn. The boys experiment with beer (FOUR SIPS (!)) and stumble across "CPR" dolls, and "necklaces" in their parents' room. Highlight: there was a very unfortunate, but hiliarous kissing practise incident on the "CPR" doll. *Cringe*.

Downton Abbey - out now

I was lucky enough to go along to the most beautiful premiere for this one - waiters with champagne, everyone in black tie (except me coming from work, whoops). I wasn't sure if I would be a fan of Downton Abbey since I haven't seen the TV show. But I was pleasantly surprised! You really don't need to have seen the show to enjoy it. It is full of funny tidbits, amazing costumes, and I think I'm even going to go back and watch the show now too. The crux of the story is that the King and Queen are coming to stay at the Abbey and we see the prep and drama that comes with them. Highlight: Dame Maggie Smith and her never ending one-liners.

A big thank you to Universal Pictures NZ and 20th Century Fox NZ for having us!
